4 Ideas for Leftover Holiday Ingredients

As you take down the tree and finish off the last of your holiday cookies, you may be wondering what to do with the leftover holiday ingredients taking up space in your cupboards.

You may not need another batch of frosted sugar cookies or a delicious Christmas ham, but there are a few easy dishes you can make using those excess items! Take a look below and we’ll show you some of our favorite ideas.

Candy cane sugar

If you purchases one too many candy canes this winter, you’re not alone! Fortunately, if you have a knack for baking, you can put those candy canes to use. Mash them up into tiny pieces—like small sugar crystals—and save your “candy cane sugar” for hot chocolate or a special mix-in for your favorite cookie recipe. Some especially crafty do-it-yourself gurus will even suggest mixing candy cane pieces into a homemade candy cane sugar scrub for all-over exfoliation!

Pecan chicken salad

Pecan sandies and other nutty treats are favorites throughout the holiday season—but once you empty out your cookie jars and still have leftover pecans, why not put them to good use? Even spring and summer chicken salads can benefit from the tasty crunch of pecans throughout the salad mixture. When entertaining family and friends, that crunch will be a welcome surprise that puts a twist on traditional versions of this tasty treat.

Cherry lemonade

Maraschino cherries are often used in holiday cookies, such as pealing bell-shaped sweets. If you have some leftover, put them to use in your favorite cherry lemonade recipe. Don’t worry, it’s not too early to indulge in this refreshing treat, especially since Florida’s no stranger to year-round warm temperatures!

Buttermilk fried chicken

Buttermilk isn’t a necessity for fried chicken, but it is favored among chefs for its ability to create especially juicy, tender batches of this southern classic. If you have some leftover from your holiday baking sessions, a delicious fried chicken dinner or chicken and waffles brunch might be the best way to use it.
