A Slice of Sweetness on National Peach Cobbler Day

A Slice of Sweetness on National Peach Cobbler Day

April 13th is National Peach Cobbler Day--and with springtime being the pinnacle of fresh fruit and sweet, familiar treats, it could not come at a better time!

Being as though our Homemade Peach Cobbler is one of the most beloved menu picks at Peach Valley, we thought we'd take a closer look at the origins of this delicious springtime treat.

Peachy beginnings

Today, it'd be hard to pass up a freshly-baked cobbler. It's choice, delicious, familiar and effortlessly sweet--but when it was first invented, it was not much more than colonists' makeshift attempt at recreating pies from back home in England.

While the pies and puddings made in already-established England were made with savory ingredients like suet (a fat from beef and mutton), the new colonies had no such luxuries. That absence of abundant, high-quality ingredients turned out to be in our benefit, of course--it led to the pies and, most importantly, peach cobblers of today! Early versions of the dish were quite literally "cobbled" into existence with not-so-delicate dollops of dough on top of whatever fruit was available. This early pie and pudding alternative persisted through more prosperous times--so even today, when we can (and do) easily find an array of high-quality ingredients, we stick to the rustic, simple cobbler method that tastes as good now as it did back then.

A Southern decree

Why do we celebrate Peach Cobbler Day? You have the Georgia Peach Council to thank for this tasty holiday, an attempt at improving the sales of the state's famous peaches. We'll just use it as an excuse to enjoy more of our favorite fruity treat!

Peach cobbler of today

As is the case with any age-old dish, peach cobbler has seen some evolution. Modern kitchen technologies let chefs experiment with unique takes like deconstructed cobblers or easy to-go bars. Of course, at Peach Valley, we've stuck to that traditional indulgence you love--a hearty, satisfying slice (served a la mode with a scoop of cool vanilla ice cream, if you choose!).

At Peach Valley, we're passionate about serving fresh, home style meals you and your family will love. Experience the freshness today! Find a Location near you and be sure to Sign Up for our E-Club for news, updates and special offers.
