Freshly Flipped Flavors - Dig In!

Hot off the griddle and ready to enjoy – it’s no secret that delicious pancakes are a breakfast favorite enjoyed by all ages worldwide. So, it’s a no-brainer that we’d celebrate a food holiday based around recognizing all our favorite ways to enjoy this sweet, fluffy favorite. September 26th was National Pancake Day. But, we celebrate pancakes all year long! So, in honor of one of our favorite offerings, we’re sharing a few fun facts you can store away for your next breakfast restaurant table discussion. Read on!

A Trip Through Pancake History

While we might view pancakes as a modern favorite for the breakfast table, you might be shocked to learn that pancakes have a long history and were probably enjoyed by our ancestors in different forms for thousands of years. In fact, experts suggest that peoples as far back as the Stone Age created a form of proto-pancake that was fried on a hot rock. Thousands of years later, we see different forms of pancakes appear in cuisines around the globe – from the honey-sweetened dishes of the Greeks and Romans, to the sweet and savory pancakes of Asian cuisine, to their appearance in the American colonies in a 1796 cookbook by Amelia Simmons.

Some Surprising Records

Beyond the simple task of chowing down, plenty of people have decided to go a step further and push the pancake boundaries to achieve amazing feats. Take, for example, some of our favorite notable world records:

  • Think you’ve got a big appetite? The largest pancake was created in Manchester, England in 1994, measuring 49 feet, 3 inches in diameter. Imagine how difficult that might be to flip!
  • The tallest stack of pancakes was 3 feet, 4 inches, set in February 2016 by James Haywood and Dave Nicholls of Newark, UK. Think you could stack up?
  • The record for the longest line of pancakes was set in London, UK, in February of 2020 – measuring 429 ft, 3 inches – and was distributed by The Felix Project to combat food waste.
  • The highest pancake toss was 31 feet, 1 inch, set in Cheektowaga, New York, by Dominic Cuzzacrea. The record was so nice, he did it twice – with this toss, Cuzzacrea beat his own record in November of 2010.

Get in the Celebratory Spirit

If you’re looking for some new and fun ways to celebrate pancakes and set this holiday apart from your normal breakfast restaurant routine, try shaking it up. Maybe this means adding pancakes to your table for breakfast in Gainesville Florida or any of our other amazing Peach Valley Café locations. Try a new topping you’ve never attempted before – it’s the perfect time! Or, later, you may even want to research different types of world pancake cuisine to expand your horizons.

You can share your celebrating on social media – so, snap a perfect picture of your pancake plate and write a few thoughts and musings about this food favorite to share with your friends. If you missed the deadline, don’t worry – we love breakfast so much, we’re celebrating National Pancake Day twice. You can catch the next holiday happening on March 1st.
