Breakfast? Dessert? Or some delicious in-between? Any way you slice it, we can’t live without the delicious, satisfying flavor of a good muffin.
In honor of National Muffin Day on February 20th, we’re tackling the big questions—like what makes a muffin a muffin? Or are muffins more breakfast or dessert? Read on for the answers, as well as some of our favorite ways to enjoy a muffin here at Peach Valley!
What’s in a name?
Stateside, “muffin” typically refers to the cupcake-shaped, bread-based treat with mix-ins and an unfrosted top. “English muffin,” on the other hand, refers to the (just-as-tasty) circle-shaped, unsweetened bread traditionally eaten in more savory dishes.
However, across the pond, the situation is flipped. The sweet variant is dubbed the “American muffin,” in many places, while the flatbread is known as plain-and-simple “muffin.”
So, which is the real deal? Technically, both probably stem from Low German “muffin,” meaning “little cake.” However, when it comes to history, the unsweetened variant takes the cake. The round muffin appeared in written recipes from the early 1700s in England (though it was enjoyed well before that), while the sweeter version surfaced in America over a century later.
Of course, in our book, each is equally delicious!
Dessert? Breakfast? Brunch?
Why worry about labels? Both kinds of muffins can be everything from breakfast to brunch to dessert! Traditional “American” muffins, for example, are sweet enough to serve as a post-meal treat—while also being wholesome enough to pair with breakfast staples like bacon and eggs. At home, you can even try your hand at savory muffins by mixing together cheese, eggs, meat, and veggies into a muffin mold! It’s easy to enjoy the savory flavor of an English muffin with butter or as part of a hearty breakfast sandwich, but smear on some cream cheese and jam for a delightfully light, sweet spin on things.
