Peachy Keen: Celebrating National Peach Month at Peach Valley Café

This August, we’re celebrating our favorite fuzzy fruit—the incomparable peach!

Not only is this versatile fruit the namesake of Peach Valley Café; it’s also a powerhouse of flavor and nutrients, surfacing in many of our favorite comfort food dishes.

Want to learn more about the peach? Just keep reading for a few fun facts!

It’s a Florida mainstay

While peaches may be known as the beloved state fruit of Georgia, they actually got their start right here in Florida! Peaches enjoyed a thriving existence in Asia long before they were brought to Europe—and eventually, Spanish settlers caught on. They brought the fuzzy fruit with them on their way to Florida in the 1600s and the rest is sweet, sweet history.

The peach was once called a “Persian apple”

Speaking of peach history… did you know that the fruit once went by a very different name? It’s said that the Romans knew the peach as the “Persian apple,” named for its Eastern origins.

What makes a peach a peach?

The peach, of course, is a small fruit from the Prunus persica tree. But so is the nectarine—in fact, the two are the same species. So why is one fuzzy and the other not?

As it turns out, the peach is distinguished by a dominant allele that manifests in that famously fuzzy coating. The nectarine has the recessive gene—one that does not include fuzziness, but otherwise, leaves the fruit generally similar to the peach. It’s the same kind of genetic variance that might cause you to have brown eyes while a sibling has blue eyes, for example.

It doesn’t just taste good… it’s good for you, too

Like all fruits, the peach is as nutritious as it is enjoyable to eat! While the entire flesh of the peach is worth consuming, don’t forget about the peel—it boasts a high percentage of antioxidants that are good for your heart, immune health, and much more. (Of course, if you want to get rid of some of that fuzz, you can do so by wiping the peach down with a wet washcloth.)
