The Origins of Brunch

The Origins of Brunch

Here at Peach Valley Café, there’s nothing we love more than a delicious brunch out with friends. It doesn’t require you to roll out of bed earlier than you’re used to, but still gives you a chance to get a jump on your day and enjoy your favorite breakfast foods with friends.

So—how did this perfectly-placed meal slot come to be? In today’s blog, we aim to find out!

A plea for change

The practice of brunch didn’t appear overnight—but a name for the mid-morning phenomenon definitely did! We have Guy Beringer, an author for the British humor magazine Hunter’s Weekly, to thank for our favorite weekend meal. In 1985, he wrote an article entitled “Brunch: A Plea,” where he suggested a switch to the agreeable, family-friendly meal. He said it would be more “cheerful, sociable and inciting” than early morning breakfasts (especially on weekends, when family members would no doubt still be sleepy from the night before!

The posh mid-morning meal

Guy Beringer put a name to the phenomenon—but what happened next was the result of America’s Hollywood stars and starlets giving a posh reputation to brunch. It’s said that they would stop in Chicago for brunch as they made their way west on long train rides, adding to the lavish feel of this novel weekend meal.

Another key change happened after World War II—people stopped going to church! While this trend may not seem connected to brunch, it did affect what people did on Sunday mornings and afternoons. Since more and more families were staying at home, and not doing much of anything on those lazy mornings, they needed a satisfying meal that would bring everyone together—and brunch was just the ticket.

How brunch became a modern favorite

Brunch today isn’t solely seen as a meal for the wealthy, nor is it only enjoyed by those who skip Sunday church! It’s gained popularity as an easy, delicious meal for families who are otherwise busy during the workweek. It has also gained traction, perhaps unsurprisingly, in college dorm dining halls, where traditional treats like pancakes are often served alongside pizza—a variety of foods sure to beckon even the sleepiest of students!

The innovation of brunch may not be the most groundbreaking change of the last few centuries—but we’re sure happy it happened anyway! Share what you love about brunch in the comments below, and be sure to stop by Peach Valley soon for a family brunch you won’t forget.
