Looking for ways to get into the holiday spirit? Try a change of scenery and enjoy a day trip to Christmas, Florida!
This small, census-designated community is easy to miss as you travel around Central Florida. But look a little closer and you’ll discover a charming, out-of-the-way gem—a bona fide Christmas capital in the heart of the Sunshine State. It makes for a terrific daycation, or even an impromptu stop on your holiday road trip. Whichever way you do it, this is a place worth seeing.
Read on as we explore the cozy community of Christmas, as well as a few fun ways to enjoy the adventure there! Take a look.
What’s in a name?
“Christmas” might seem like a name better reserved for cold, snowy climates up north—so how did a decidedly Sunshine State spot earn the honor? Thank Fort Christmas. On Christmas Day in 1837, 2,000 soldiers, as well as volunteers from Alabama, arrived to construct the fort during the Second Seminole War. You can visit a recreation of the fort today, an unassuming spot nestled among the shade-laden Central Florida thicket.
A visit to Christmas also offers visitors the chance to meet Swampy—the world’s largest gator. Don’t worry, though, he won’t bite. Swampy is actually an alligator-shaped building you can walk through when you visit Jungle Adventures, a nature park where guests get to see gators, deer, panthers, bears, tropical birds and many more animals in their natural habitat. The park is open 365 days a year, so feel free to stop by during your holiday adventures for a festive outing that’s uniquely Florida.
Photo ops galore
In addition to a must-do photo with Swampy, a visit to Christmas gives you the chance to snap a variety of seasonal shots. Head to the community Christmas tree that stands proudly all year long “as a symbol of love and good will: the Christmas Spirit every day in the year.” Don Santa hats and pose under palm trees—though be warned, your relatives will be jealous! Stop by the town’s welcome sign, too, where a cheery “welcome to Christmas” will be the perfect mantra for your annual Christmas card.
For season’s greetings…
Once you have that Christmas card ready to go, we have the perfect place to mail it from—the Christmas post office. Here you can have your letter stamped with a Christmas, Florida postmark, a popular way for locals and visitors alike to share the love with friends and family out of state.
We hope that today’s virtual tour inspires an impromptu holiday adventure! And for fueling up along the way, or starting your day with a delicious family breakfast, we here at Peach Valley are happy to be part of the journey!
