Why do we love comfort food so much? The short answer, of course, is easy—it’s comforting!
But what makes comfort food classics like macaroni and cheese, fried chicken, or spaghetti and meatballs so irresistible and sure to please? The answer, as we’ll find out in today’s blog, is multifold. Just read on to learn more!
It’s familiar
Even those of us who love change tend to enjoy the things that are familiar to us, too—the things that remind us of childhood, family, or our earliest ways of life. This is why American comfort food is traditionally seen as items like chicken noodle soup, fried chicken, macaroni and cheese, and other kitchen staples—these are the foods we grew up on, the things that so many of us can easily recollect. Even when times are changing—and with them change our careers, surroundings, and lifestyles—we can count on these tasty classics to carry us along.
The familiar nature of comfort food is why there’s no clear-cut definition for what constitutes a food of this variety. In other parts of the world or in other families, an individual’s comfort food might be something less traditional—but if it’s what the person grew up with, it makes sense that they would cling to it for comfort later on!
It’s communal
It’s no surprise why so many classic comfort foods are social dishes—macaroni and cheese is always made in big batches, for example, while you rarely make chicken and waffles for one. These dishes lend themselves to dining with family and friends, and can make us feel closer to the ones we love whether or not we are actually with them.
